Rhinoplasty: An Introduction

Rhinoplasty is a type of plastic surgery that changes the shape of the nose. It can alter many aspects of the nose’s structure and aesthetic appearance. It can change the size; making the nose larger or smaller, change the tip, or angle of the nose in relation to other facial parts. Rhinoplasty can also eliminate what one perceives as defects in or on their nose.

However Rhinoplasty doesn’t have to be just for aesthetic purposes. Some people suffer from a deviated septum, which causes breathing impairment. Rhinoplasty can adjust the nasal structure, aligning the nose and improving the patient’s quality of life.

The procedure itself is done with the utmost care not to compromise the exterior of your nose. Incisions are made to give the surgeon full access to the nasal structure and support, however these incisions are done on the inside of the nose so as to remain invisible after the surgery. Then the surgeon will go about altering the nasal structure, either adding or subtracting tissue (organic or artificial). At the end of the surgery the nose will be secured with a splint to allow it to heal in a stable position.

After the surgery the patient can expect a small degree of swelling for about a weeks time, before the bandages can start being taken of and life can return to normal.
