Plastic Surgery Across the Globe

It is no secret that plastic surgery is one of the most popular and buzzing markets in most developed parts of the world. With younger clients and more options for surgery it is hardly surprising either, and the figures continue to grow as we speak. Every city has its renowned surgery and this has created a global industry in which medical tourism has developed allowing a mix of business from all parts of the world. Whilst it can seem hard to keep track of all the developments taking place in cosmetic surgery there are figures that we can trace that form an interesting pattern for us as observers. Which countries are having the most plastic surgery, and what procedures do they like the best? In this article we take a look at the insights.

There were more than 23 million plastic surgeries in 2013 according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, with the most popular procedures being eyelid surgery, liposuction and breast augmentation. The procedures themselves might not be surprising but the top countries might not be what you expected. After the United States, Brazil was top for the most surgeries performed in the past few years. The explanation behind this is the fact that there is a generous tax waiver currently held over all plastic surgery making it affordable and also attracted medical tourism. Their highest demanded procedures are shared with those of the United States; Breast augmentation and liposuction.

Another entry near the top, and rising each year, is Korea. Here more than 20 twenty percent of all women have had plastic surgery. Specifically women seek out eyelid surgery in the form of the ‘double eyelid’ procedure that leaves them with a wider-eyed appearance. The surgery has come under criticism due to its western-centric image of appearance but continues to rise in popularity in the country. Similarly in Iran, which now sees more than 40,000 surgeries a year, many women seek cosmetic surgery with 60% demanding nose shaping. Younger generations criticise the popularity of the procedure because it is not natural to the Iranian physique and is quickly creating a new image of beauty within society.

The spectrum of plastic surgery is wide, diverse and unexpected as this small insight reveals. Using these kinds of figures can help to determine facts about what ideas of beauty certain parts of the world have as well as concrete data about plastic surgery, making them a new and valuable factor of  society that both doctors and social scientists must now keep an eye on.
